Dire Straits were a British rock band formed in 1977 in London. The band was led by guitarist and songwriter Mark Knopfler, and the original lineup also included his brother David Knopfler (rhythm guitar), John Illsley (bass guitar) and Pick Withers (drums).

Their music is characterized by the sophisticated guitar melodies of Mark Knopfler, combining narrative lyrics and evocative atmospheres. Dire Straits achieved great international success in the 1980s with albums such as "Dire Straits" (1978), "Communiqué" (1979), "Making Movies" (1980) and "Brothers in Arms" (1985).

"Brothers in Arms" became one of the best-selling albums of all time, building on the success of the singles "Money for Nothing" and "Walk of Life." Knopfler's distinctive guitar playing and their unique blend of rock, blues and country made them one of the most beloved bands of their time.

Following the success of "Brothers in Arms", Dire Straits continued to produce music and perform live, earning a reputation as one of the world's best rock bands.
